Jim's doors were always open, his heart was always full, his company was always welcome, his help was always given, his wit was always ready, his charm was warm, and the lives of everyone that knew him were made richer. He never met a stranger, was a best friend to many, was never at a loss for words, his cup was always full, and he had abundant energy and zest for life. He was a great son, brother, husband, father, uncle, nephew, cousin, and friend.
He was a devoted husband and had a romance of nearly forty years with his wife. He was a dedicated and proud father and spent many great times with his wife and family at the beach, in the rivers, on the islands, boating, camping, fishing, exploring, and traveling, cooking, and baking, and inventing.
Jim was a communicant of St. Michaels Church, Tybee Island, a lector and sang in the choir. He attended parochial schools in Atlanta, St. Michaels at Tybee Island., and in Knoxville, Tn. He graduated from the University of Tennessee, then worked for Proctor & Gamble in Texas, returning to Tybee years later. He worked in sales and construction and real estate. A talented craftsman and artisan, he helped renovate multiple properties for himself and others in Savannah, and Fort Screven, Tybee, and was especially proud of the beautiful restoration of his home in Fort Screven he called the Villa of St. Francis. He loved working at the UGA Extension Burton 4-H Center at Tybee Island.
Honorary Pallbearers will be his brothers, and close friends Brian & Kevin Smith, and Frank Fischer.
A Vigil will be held Friday from 5:00 to 7:00, Rosary at 6:00, at Fox & Weeks, Whitemarsh Island Chapel. Catholic Mass on Saturday at 11:00 A.M., St. Peters Church, Wilmington Island.

We just heard about Jim and we are so sorry. I haven't seen him for a while, but every meeting was always so cordial and full of warmth. Most of my memories go back to the days of the De Soto and all the fun that we had there. We saw Jim on the beach a couple or so years ago and he was about to take I believe his daughter and some others to New York for a weekend. We were both so impressed, and wondered what was in store for him on that trip! We send our love and condolences to all of you. We know that your hearts are broken. His departure was way too soon for all left behind. Love Michael and Marianne Pappas

Big Jim was an awesome human being. He was always there to keep us in line, to drop some wisdom on us whenever he'd hear ideas brewing. Recalling the times that I would watch him interact with the rest of the family he never sounded like just some guy talking to his family, you could hear how much he truly loved and cared in the tone of his voice. I never saw him act unjust. The conversations with this guy were second to none. He was so intelligent and understanding that the conversations helped mold me as a person. I got that feeling from being around Big Jim that just made me want to be a better person. I wish I could explain it better. Made me feel safe when he was around in the house. Rest in peace Big Jim. I am thankful to have met you and consider myself lucky that you had an influence in my life.

- Sam Carfrey, Savannah, GA
